How to Choose the Right Wedding Dog Attendant: 10 Questions Every Couple or Planner Should Ask
Three weeks before her wedding, a bride reached out to Dog Of Honor with an urgent question.
The wedding dog attendant she had hired had just canceled. Fortunately, we still had availability and were able to step in. That experience reinforced something I've believed for years.
Most couples spend hours comparing prices, Instagram feeds, and online reviews. Very few ask the questions that actually reveal how a wedding dog attendant will perform when it matters most.
After helping more than 400 dogs participate in weddings throughout Northern California, I've learned that the best questions don't just tell you what's included.
They reveal how someone thinks.
Whether you hire Dog Of Honor or another company, these are the ten questions I recommend asking before trusting someone with your dog on your wedding day.
1. What happens if my assigned attendant can't make it?
Reliability isn't measured when everything goes according to plan. It's measured when something unexpected happens.
Why it matters
Illnesses and emergencies happen to every business. The important question isn't whether something unexpected could occur. It's whether there's already a plan in place.
After more than 250 weddings, Dog Of Honor has never canceled on a couple. We've had situations where an assigned attendant became unavailable, but because we have experienced team members, documented timelines, and backup attendants, we've always been able to provide seamless coverage.
What you're really evaluating
Reliability.
A great answer sounds like...
"We have trained backup attendants, documented timelines for every wedding, and a plan in place if someone's unavailable."
🚩 Red Flag
"I've never been asked that before."
2. Are you insured?
The right insurance protects more than your dog. It protects your venue and your wedding day, too.
Why it matters
Don't assume every pet professional carries the same insurance.
If your attendant will be transporting your dog, ask whether transportation is covered under their policy. Also ask whether they can provide a Certificate of Insurance (COI) and add your venue as an Additional Insured if requested.
Many wedding venues require vendors handling pets to carry commercial liability insurance.
What you're really evaluating
Professionalism.
A great answer sounds like...
"Yes. We carry commercial liability insurance, transportation coverage, and can provide a COI if your venue requests one."
🚩 Red Flag
"I think we're covered..." or “My insurance is through Rover…”
3. How many weddings has my assigned attendant personally worked?
Company experience and individual experience aren't always the same thing.
Why it matters
A company may have hundreds of weddings under its belt, but that doesn't necessarily reflect the experience of the person who will actually be caring for your dog.
Ask about the experience of your assigned attendant and how new team members are trained before working independently.
What you're really evaluating
Competence.
A great answer sounds like...
"We carefully match weddings with attendants based on experience, and every new team member receives hands on training before working independently."
🚩 Red Flag
Answering with only the company's total number of weddings.
4. How do you communicate before the wedding?
A seamless wedding day starts weeks, not hours, before the ceremony.
Why it matters
A professional wedding dog attendant shouldn't disappear after you sign the contract. You should receive planning resources, reminders, timeline guidance, and proactive communication throughout the planning process.
Your attendant should also coordinate with your planner, venue, and photography team well before the wedding. On the wedding day, they should connect with the officiant and DJ before the ceremony so everyone is aligned on your dog's ceremony entrance.
What you're really evaluating
Organization.
A great answer sounds like...
"We guide you through the planning process, communicate with your vendor team, and finalize everything before your wedding day."
🚩 Red Flag
"We'll figure it out when we get there." or “Just text me if you have questions. See you on your wedding day!”
5. How do you handle unexpected situations?
Every wedding has surprises. Experience shows in how someone responds.
Why it matters
Timelines shift. Dogs get tired. Weather changes.
The question isn't whether something unexpected will happen. The question is how your attendant makes decisions when it does.
What you're really evaluating
Judgment.
A great answer sounds like...
"We always prioritize your dog's safety first, then protecting your wedding experience, while adapting the plan as needed."
🚩 Red Flag
"We usually just stick to the original plan."
6. What equipment do you bring?
Preparation is often measured by the things you hope you'll never need.
Why it matters
A well-prepared wedding dog attendant arrives with far more than a leash.
Ask what they keep in their vehicle.
At Dog Of Honor, our wedding day kit includes pet seat belt restraints, backup leashes, water, bowls, cooling fans, wagons, strollers, pet first aid supplies, treats, enrichment toys, lint rollers, towels, wipes, backup wedding attire, faux floral collars, ring carriers, and more.
What you're really evaluating
Preparation.
A great answer sounds like...
A detailed list that demonstrates thoughtful planning and readiness.
🚩 Red Flag
"I usually just bring a leash and some treats."
7. Do you capture behind-the-scenes content?
Your photographer tells the story of your wedding. Who tells the story of your dog's day?
Why it matters
Some wedding dog attendants include behind-the-scenes content, while others don't.
At Dog Of Honor, it's included with every wedding.
We capture candid moments, guest interactions, posed photos, and short videos throughout the day. Everything is delivered in a Google Drive gallery within a week, and we often create fun Instagram Reels featuring our couples and their pups.
What you're really evaluating
Added value.
A great answer sounds like...
"Here's how we document your dog's experience and when you'll receive everything."
🚩 Red Flag
"If I remember, I'll take a few pictures."
8. What's your philosophy on off-leash ceremonies?
This question isn't really about leashes. It's about judgment.
Why it matters
An experienced wedding dog attendant should have thoughtful reasons behind every recommendation.
At Dog Of Honor, we rarely allow dogs to walk off-leash unless the ceremony takes place in a fully enclosed area. Beautiful photos aren't worth risking your dog's safety.
What you're really evaluating
Safety mindset.
A great answer sounds like...
"It depends on your dog, your venue, and the ceremony setup."
🚩 Red Flag
"Absolutely! We always let dogs walk off leash."
9. What will you wear?
Professional attire isn't about fashion. It's about blending seamlessly into your wedding.
Why it matters
Your wedding dog attendant appears in your photos, works alongside your vendor team, and interacts with your guests. Professional attire should complement your wedding rather than distract from it.
What you're really evaluating
Professional presence.
A great answer sounds like...
"We dress professionally and intentionally blend into your wedding."
🚩 Red Flag
"Usually a company T shirt and leggings."
10. Tell me about a time you changed the plan on a wedding day.
Experience isn't measured by whether things go according to plan. It's measured by knowing when the plan should change.
Why it matters
No wedding goes exactly according to plan. An experienced wedding dog attendant knows when to adapt and, more importantly, has the confidence to recommend a different approach when it's in your dog's best interest.
Sometimes that means swapping out a harness before arriving at the venue because it's easier to slip out of than expected.
Sometimes it means recommending a quiet break when a dog becomes overstimulated.
Sometimes it means deciding against a floral leash after realizing a curious Golden Retriever has already tried to eat the groom's boutonniere.
Those aren't changes because something went wrong.
They're changes because experience allows us to recognize potential problems before they happen.
What you're really evaluating
Judgment.
A great answer sounds like...
"Every wedding is different. I'd be happy to share examples of times we've adjusted the plan to keep dogs safe and create a better experience for everyone."
🚩 Red Flag
We've never had to change the plan.
Choosing a wedding dog attendant isn't about finding someone to hold a leash.
It's about finding someone you trust to make thoughtful decisions on behalf of one of your family's most important members.
The right questions won't just help you compare services.
They'll help you recognize the professionalism, preparation, and judgment that create a seamless wedding day.
