Do You Need a Pet Sitter or a Wedding Pet Attendant? Here's the Difference
When a wedding goes well, guests notice the beautiful flowers, the emotional ceremony, and, of course, the adorable dog.
What they don't notice are the dozens of tiny decisions happening behind the scenes to make those moments possible.
Is the dog getting overwhelmed?
Do the officiant and DJ know exactly when to cue the dog's ceremony entrance?
Is the harness or collar secure enough to prevent an escape?
Is the dog's attire sitting perfectly for photos?
Are the flowers in the dog's floral collar safe if they decide to take a bite?
Most couples never think about these details, and they shouldn't have to.
The Dog of Honor Philosophy
Every wedding vendor has a job to do.
Your planner manages the timeline.
Your photographer preserves the memories.
Your florist creates the details.
Our role is different.
Our goal is simple: create unforgettable moments for your pet while making the work behind them invisible.
That means anticipating problems before they happen, communicating behind the scenes with your vendor team, advocating for your dog's well-being, and making hundreds of small decisions throughout the day so you never have to.
When everything goes according to plan, guests remember your dog.
They don't remember the work it took to make those moments possible. That's exactly how we like it.
After helping more than 400 pets participate in weddings throughout Northern California, we've learned that this invisible work is what separates a professional wedding dog attendant from a traditional pet sitter.
Both play an important role. They simply serve different purposes.
A Shared Goal, Two Very Different Jobs
A professional pet sitter and a professional wedding dog attendant share the same goal:
Providing exceptional care for your dog.
The difference is that a wedding dog attendant does it within one of the most carefully orchestrated events of your life.
A wedding isn't simply another outing with your dog.
It's a carefully planned celebration involving timelines, vendors, photography schedules, ceremony cues, and countless moving parts.
When your dog becomes part of that celebration, they become part of the production.
That's where a wedding dog attendant comes in.
The Biggest Misconception About Wedding Dog Attendants
One of the most common things we hear from couples is:
"We figured we just needed someone to hold the leash, pick up the poop, and drive our dog home after the cocktail hour"
Those things are certainly part of the job.
But they're only a small fraction of what happens behind the scenes.
An experienced wedding dog attendant isn't simply supervising your dog.
We're managing your dog's entire wedding experience.

Long before your wedding day arrives, we're already collaborating with the people who will help bring your vision to life.
We communicate with your planner and venue before the wedding day so everyone understands your dog's role.
We also coordinate with your photographer, videographer, and content creator to understand exactly what moments you want captured.
Whether it's getting ready, a first look, portraits, or cocktail hour, we make sure those moments are built into the timeline and everyone knows who's capturing them.
On the wedding day, we continue coordinating behind the scenes.
Before the ceremony begins, we connect with the officiant and DJ to confirm your dog's cue so everyone is working from the same game plan.
Wedding planners especially appreciate working with experienced wedding dog attendants because they know your dog won't become another item on an already full checklist.
Our goal is to make life easier for everyone involved, especially the planner who's orchestrating dozens of moving parts throughout the day.
We Don't Just Care for Your Dog.
We Manage Their Entire Wedding Experience.
Every Dog Of Honor couple receives a preparation guide with planning resources, timeline recommendations, attire ideas, and a detailed overview of what to expect.
By the time your wedding day arrives, we're not asking you a long list of questions. We already know the plan.
That allows you to focus on getting married instead of managing logistics.
Throughout the day, we're constantly evaluating details most people never notice.
Has the timeline shifted?
Does the dog need a quiet break?
Is it time for water?
Should we move into the shade?
Should we straighten the floral collar before portraits?
Should we adjust the plan to keep your dog comfortable?
These aren't dramatic decisions. They are dozens of tiny ones. Together, they create a seamless experience.
Experience Means Preventing Problems Before They Happen
One recent wedding reminded us of that.
After picking up two dogs from their home, we realized the harnesses they were wearing made it much easier for them to slip out if they became startled or overly excited.
Before arriving at the venue, we stopped by our home to pick up two escape-resistant Sunny Tails harnesses that matched the wedding colors.
To everyone else, they simply looked like color-coordinated wedding pet attire.
To us, it was one of dozens of preventative decisions that kept the dogs safe while allowing them to fully participate in the celebration.
Sometimes the Best Decision Is Changing the Plan
At another wedding, a Golden Retriever named Maple decided the groom's boutonniere looked delicious.
After letting the florist know the groom needed a replacement, we realized something else. The couple had ordered a floral-wrapped leash.
If Maple wanted to eat the boutonniere, the flowers hanging from the leash, so close to the snacking zone, were a no-go. Together with the florist, we decided not to scrap the plan for the floral leash.
Our responsibility is always to advocate for your dog's well-being, even when that means adjusting the plan.
We're More Than a Wedding Dog Attendant. We're Your Dog's Canine Concierge.
Throughout the day, we're your dog's advocate, chauffeur, behind-the-scenes storyteller, and canine concierge.
One of the services that sets Dog Of Honor apart is the behind-the-scenes content we capture.
While your photographer is telling the story of your wedding, we're capturing the story of your dog's wedding day, the moments that happen when no one else is watching.
Those candid moments beautifully complement your photographer, videographer, or content creator by capturing your dog's perspective of the day.
When a Pet Sitter Is Actually the Better Choice
If your dog isn't participating in the ceremony or photos, you may not need a wedding dog attendant.
We also believe that if your dog has a longtime pet sitter or trainer they absolutely adore, that relationship can be more valuable than wedding expertise, especially for anxious pups. What's best for your dog should always come before what's best for any business.
